The Queen Marked Will and Kate's Anniversary by Bestowing a Very Special Honor on Kate - POPSUGAR

Queen Elizabeth II has just bestowed a very special honor on her granddaughter-in-law Kate Middleton. The queen appointed Kate a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order on April 29, which was also the duchess's wedding anniversary, marking eight years since she married Prince William and became a royal. This rare and prestigious award is given to Commonwealth residents in recognition of their personal services to the Sovereign, so in this case, it is the queen's way of recognizing how Kate has supported her reign through her work as a senior royal.

Kate joins a number of other members of the royal family who've already been granted the honor, among them Princess Anne, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. She will now wear a blue sash at some formal royal engagements.

The Royal Victorian Order is a dynastic order of knighthood, and dame is the highest female rank, equivalent to the male knight. The order was established in 1896 by Queen Victoria, as a way of publicly thanking those who had provided a personal service to her. Though any Commonwealth resident is eligible for the honor, it is most often awarded to members of the royal family, diplomats, and senior members of the royal household (such as the Dowager Duchess of Grafton, who has the wonderful title of "Mistress of the Robes"). There are currently fewer than 50 living recipients of the honor, not counting honorary members (those from countries outside of the Commonwealth). Prince Philip, consort to the queen, had to wait a lot longer than Kate to join the order: the queen awarded it to him on their 70th wedding anniversary in 2017!

The Taylor Swift effect: Nashville sounds off on singer's political endorsements - The Guardian

More than 160,000 people registered to vote in the space of 48 hours after Taylor Swift finally weighed in on American politics this week, sparking excitement on the left that the country-cum-pop star could even seal a Senate seat in Tennessee.

Swift declared her support for two Democratic candidates in a post on her Instagram account on Sunday. Less than five weeks ahead of the November midterm elections, which are widely seen as a referendum on Donald Trump’s America, Swift’s intervention has prompted a mixture of praise, chin-stroking and outrage.

The 28-year-old is far from the first celebrity to express her political views, but her young fans – she has more than 112 million followers on Instagram – are seen as particularly loyal and impressionable.

But will the Swift intervention make a difference?

“One hundred percent,” said Tee Cahours, who was tending bar at Crazy Town in Nashville’s touristy Broadway strip. “She’s a huge icon not only in pop but country music – she’s the reason that nowadays people are more likely to listen to country.

Analysis: Kanye West and Donald Trump's odd lunch exploits celebrity - Boston Herald

WASHINGTON — As foreign and domestic emergencies demanded President Trump’s attention — from the catastrophic aftermath of Hurricane Michael and to the growing evidence that Saudi Arabia was behind the brutal murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi — Trump instead gave the mic to a celebrity supporter.

In the process, he shined a light on an issue that this administration and every administration has done too little about: mental health.

Trump was scheduled to have a working lunch with rapper Kanye West, among others, to discuss criminal justice reform and violence in Chicago, West’s hometown. It was not billed as a media event. But with West — wearing a red “Make America Great Again” cap — seated in the Oval Office before the lunch, Trump invited the media in.

The reason was unclear. Trump has a penchant for using his handful of black celebrity supporters to dismiss criticisms that he fans flames of racism for his own political benefit — recall his statements about “very fine people on both sides” of last year’s deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., and his reported profane description of African nations.

So there was Ye, praising the president for everything from his summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un (“You stopped the war!,” West declared) to the “male energy” of Trump’s MAGA slogan.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Arrive at Princess Eugenie's Wedding - Entertainment Tonight

It’s deja vu for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex!

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry arrived to the grounds of Windsor Castle on Friday for a royal wedding — but not their own this time.

Just five months after Meghan and Harry tied the knot in a historic ceremony, the couple returned to Windsor Castle for the wedding of Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie, and her fiance, Jack Brooksbank.

The couple arrived around 10:30 a.m. local time, rushing out of their car and straight into St. George's Chapel, so as not to draw too much attention.

The Duchess of Sussex sported a navy Givenchy dress and coat, referencing her Royal Wedding gown designer, and a hat by Noel Stewart. Prince Harry wore the traditional coat with tails, a sky blue tie, and grey pants. They were quickly followed by Prince William and Kate Middleton.

On Sunday, Taylor Swift endorsed two Tennessee Democratic candidates for Congress — one for the Senate, the other for the House — and urged her millions of followers to register to vote. On Thursday, Kanye West joined President Trump for a lunch visit at the White House, capped by a choice expletive in the Oval Office. And this weekend, Alec Baldwin, known for spoofing Trump on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” is headed to New Hampshire to speak at a fundraising dinner for Democrats.

Live from the campaign trail, it’s the Celebrification of Politics, 2020 Edition.

The election of Trump — a reality TV star turned novice politician turned president — represented the latest and most potent fusion of politics with the nation’s celebrity fascination. Now, as the 2020 presidential campaign ramps up, a new cast of celebrities and famous-for-politics personalities are taking the stage as some Democrats ponder — with a mix of enthusiasm and horror — whether they need to put up their own celebrity nominee against Trump.

Magic Leap Plans to Use Location-Based Entertainment to Win Over Consumers - Variety

Magic Leap is taking some cues from one of the latest trends in virtual reality: The maker of the Magic Leap One headset is looking to use location-based entertainment to get consumers familiar with its technology, and ultimately prepare them to buy its headsets once a mass-market version is available to the general public.

“We think that market, those location-based experiences, is huge,” said Magic Leap chief content officer Rio Caraeff in an interview with Variety on the sidelines of the company’s first L.E.A.P. developer conference in Los Angeles this week.

The company used L.E.A.P. to demonstrate a first example of location-based entertainment powered by its Magic Leap One headset. Santa Fe, N.M.-based arts collective Meow Wolf showed off its Navigator, a giant robot vehicle that attendees could interact with via a combination of touch screen displays and superimposed AR imagery of distant galaxies.

A promotional video for Meow Wolf’s Navigator, which the arts collective built in partnership with Magnopus.

The seven-minute demo of the Navigator was just a first taste for Meow Wolf’s plans to incorporate AR into future attractions. In the company’s upcoming Denver outpost, attendees will be able to freely roam the space wearing Magic Leap’s headsets, and interact with multiple art pieces, including the Navigator showed off this week. The arts group, whose funders include “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin, currently plans to open this AR-powered exhibition by 2020.
